What is Bacopa?

The Bacopa has been used for centuries as an Ayurvedic medicinal herb. It is also known as the herb of grace, Indian pennywort, thyme-leaved gratiola, or the water hyssop. Despite its many names, the plant is easily recognizable for its fleshy leaves and tiny white or purple flowers. 

This water-dwelling plant is commonly used as a decorative element in aquariums because it can thrive underwater. It loves wet, tropical environments and is a creeping succulent, with all parts of the plant included in Ayurvedic preparations. You can eat the aerial parts fresh, while the whole herb can be dried, ground, and used medicinally. 

This herb is a native crop of India and Sri Lanka but has been naturalized in the US’ southern coast and as well as Australia. However, its notoriety for absorbing pollutants due to its crawling nature makes it challenging to ascertain its purity. 

Its name, Brahmi, is an ode to the great Hindu god Brahma, representing the essence by which all creations come from and is associated to the “cosmic consciousness”. Therefore, the Bacopa’s attributes lean towards knowledge, memory, concentration, and learning.
